Eine Besonderheit bei Track and Trace ist die Zuordnung und Überwachung auf Item-Ebene. Dazu müssen die einzelnen Produkte ein einmaliges Merkmal besitzen und somit eindeutig identifizierbar sein. Mit Hilfe einer fälschungssicheren Serialisierung wird jedem Produkt eine einmalige Seriennummer, der Serialcode, zugewiesen. Aus Datensicht kann genau dieser Serialcode die Grundlage zum Aufbau eines Track and Trace-Systems dienen.
Darüber hinaus liefern die Prüfungen schon jetzt genaue Informationen:
- Wo die Produkte gescannt werden
- Wie häufig die Codes einer bestimmten Charge verifiziert werden
- Ob die Richtlinien in der Vertriebskette eingehalten werden
